Sony Boss: “Creativity Is For Humans, Not AI”

Sony Group President and CEO Hiroki Totoki and Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick addressed the role of artificial intelligence in game development at the Paley International Summit in New York City, both asserting that AI will not replace human creativity in the entertainment industry.

Totoki emphasized that while AI is a valuable tool, creativity fundamentally remains a human domain. “Creativity is for humans, not AI,” he stated, noting that he encourages employees to use AI appropriately while protecting the rights and interests of creators and artists. His position reflects a view of AI as something to be strategically integrated into workflows rather than allowed to subsume creative roles.

Zelnick offered a complementary perspective, arguing that AI itself will not replace developers. However, he contended that the real risk lies with developers who fail to embrace the technology—they may find themselves displaced by professionals who do adopt it. This framing shifts the concern from AI replacing humans to professionals needing to adapt to AI as an essential tool.

Both executives agreed that artificial intelligence holds significant value for the gaming industry and should be leveraged strategically. Their comments reflect an emerging consensus among major publishers that AI can enhance development processes and workflows but cannot replicate the creative vision and innovation that human developers bring to games. The discussion underscores ongoing industry conversations about balancing technological advancement with preserving creative integrity and protecting artist rights.
