Microsoft: FSR 4.1 Coming “Very Soon” to Xbox Game Developers for Series X, Series S
Microsoft and AMD have announced that FSR 4.1, an advanced machine-learning-based upscaling technology, is coming to Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. Xbox vice president Jason Ronald and CTO Scott Van Vliet confirmed the news, though neither specified a release date beyond “very soon.”
FSR 4.1 is a temporal upscaler developed by AMD that renders games at lower resolutions and reconstructs them at higher resolutions using AI, effectively boosting visual sharpness while maintaining or improving performance. It represents AMD’s competitive answer to Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling solution and positions Xbox to rival PlayStation’s existing PSSR and recently launched QSSR upscalers.
Beyond current-gen consoles, the rollout will also reach Xbox Ally and Ally X gaming handhelds, plus AMD Ryzen APUs and Radeon RX 6000-series graphics cards. AMD had originally planned RX 6000 support for 2027 but accelerated the timeline this week. An older version of FSR was already supported on Xbox, but FSR 4.1 represents a significant generational leap in quality and performance.
The timing proves particularly significant for Xbox Series S owners, as the reveal coincides with news that Xbox’s next-generation console codenamed Helix has been delayed to 2028. With current hardware now expected to remain relevant longer, FSR 4.1 provides developers with tools to extend the visual and performance viability of Series X and Series S games. FSR 4.1 has already proven popular on Steam Deck since its release, making its Xbox arrival a welcomed development for the platform.
