Beyond Good & Evil 2 reportedly still in development 18 years after being announced, now a “solo-first” adventure
Beyond Good & Evil 2, one of the gaming industry’s most notoriously troubled projects, remains in active development nearly two decades after its initial announcement in 2008. According to reports from sources close to the development team, the game is still in early pre-production and has only recently entered the alpha phase.
The game’s troubled journey has witnessed significant shifts in direction. Between 2019 and 2022, Ubisoft reportedly conceived the sequel as a “highly multiplayer and connected” experience featuring multiple planets where players would be matchmade together. However, the project has since pivoted substantially. The game is now being developed as a “solo-first” adventure with emphasis on story-driven gameplay, with co-op elements relegated to optional features—a dramatic departure from the original multiplayer-focused vision.
Combat in the revitalized project has reportedly drawn inspiration from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, suggesting an action-focused approach. Despite the extended development history, Ubisoft has maintained the project is alive. In January 2026, Beyond Good & Evil 2’s director reaffirmed the game remains “unaffected” by the publisher’s recent company-wide restructuring, with this assurance subsequently echoed by developers associated with the project.
The game has become infamous for holding the record for the longest development cycle of any video game in history. With confirmation of continued progress and a shift toward a more focused, story-driven design, there remains cautious optimism that fans may finally see the sequel come to fruition.
