Star Wars Battlefront 3 Reportedly In Development By EA’s Top Shooter Studios
EA has announced that its premier shooter studios, DICE (Battlefield) and Respawn Entertainment (Apex Legends), are collaborating on a new project as part of a broader company restructuring that includes layoffs and the closure of BioWare. According to multiple sources cited by Variety, the collaboration will produce Star Wars Battlefront 3, though EA has officially confirmed only the partnership itself, not the specific project.
The development of a new Battlefront game represents a notable reversal for EA. The previous sequel in the franchise was cancelled following the 2017 release of Battlefront 2, largely due to Disney’s licensing fees taking a substantial 20% cut of the game’s profits. EA leadership determined the financial returns were insufficient to justify continued development.
The pairing of DICE and Respawn brings together two of EA’s most successful multiplayer teams. DICE brings its expertise from the Battlefield franchise, while Respawn contributes technical knowledge from the free-to-play phenomenon Apex Legends. The collaboration is positioned as an effort to unlock growth in EA’s shooter portfolio.
The announcement comes amid significant turbulence at EA, which is undergoing restructuring to focus resources on higher-priority projects. While unconfirmed, the Star Wars Battlefront 3 project could leverage both studios’ experience with large-scale multiplayer gameplay and live-service mechanics.
