Games like Call of Duty and EA Sports FC most at risk of losing players during GTA 6 launch, according to new data

Gaming consultancy Open World released new data analyzing the competitive threat posed by Grand Theft Auto 6’s imminent launch. The research identifies competitive shooters and sports games—particularly Call of Duty and EA Sports FC—as facing the greatest risk of losing players when GTA 6 releases next month.

Survey data indicates that 69% of PC and console gamers plan to play the highly anticipated title, signaling a major shift in player attention across multiple genres. In the US market alone, Sensor Tower estimates 6.08 million digital pre-orders as of October 13, generating $594 million in revenue, demonstrating the scale of GTA 6’s anticipated player base.

The consultancy conducted the risk assessment to help developers understand which player audiences are most likely to shift focus during GTA 6’s launch window and prepare mitigation strategies accordingly. The analysis identifies that competitive and sports game communities face the highest risk of churn, as players with disposable gaming time may prioritize the open-world title. Developers are advised to adjust content schedules, live-service events, and engagement strategies during this critical period to retain players in their communities.
