Shader Compilation Stutter Begone: Nvidia’s Latest GPU Drivers Finally Add Advanced Shader Delivery

Nvidia has released GPU driver version 621.01, introducing support for Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) technology across RTX and RTX Spark graphics cards. The move allows Nvidia users to access a solution to one of PC gaming’s most persistent annoyances: shader compilation stutter.

Shader compilation stutter occurs when games compile shaders on-the-fly during gameplay, typically when encountering new visual effects or models for the first time. These momentary hitches can disrupt the gaming experience. ASD addresses this by downloading precompiled shaders or offloading shader compilation to Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, leveraging DirectX 12, Windows 11, and the Microsoft Agility SDK.

Beyond eliminating mid-game stuttering, ASD significantly reduces initial game launch times by circumventing the traditional shader compilation process that follows game installation or driver updates. Gears of War: E-Day exemplified these benefits, achieving substantially faster startup times.

With Nvidia now supporting ASD alongside AMD, Qualcomm, and forthcoming Intel support, the technology is accessible to the vast majority of PC gamers. While adoption remains limited to a select few games currently, the potential for widespread implementation promises smoother gaming experiences with significantly fewer performance interruptions.
