OneDrive’s new hero links should put an end to file-sharing chaos
Microsoft has introduced a new feature for OneDrive designed to streamline file sharing and eliminate the need to generate new links when sharing permissions change. Called “hero links,” the feature maintains consistent URLs for shared files regardless of permission or access setting modifications. This addresses a longstanding pain point in cloud storage workflows: previously, users were forced to create entirely new links whenever they adjusted file permissions, resulting in accumulated duplicate links pointing to the same file even though older links would continue to function.
The announcement came during Microsoft’s OneDrive and Copilot event, where the company revealed numerous enhancements to its cloud storage platform. Many of these improvements leverage Copilot to help users locate files and generate new content more efficiently. The hero links feature represents a quality-of-life improvement focused on the fundamental task of file sharing.
By keeping links static across permission changes, users can now share a single link that remains valid even as access controls are modified. This simplification should reduce confusion around which version of a link is current and eliminate the management overhead of tracking multiple URLs for the same content. The feature exemplifies Microsoft’s broader effort to make cloud collaboration more seamless and intuitive for OneDrive users.
