Resident Evil: Requiem made more money from PlayStation discs than on Xbox in total, reportedly, as Sony’s march to a discless future continues
Resident Evil: Requiem’s physical disc sales on PlayStation consoles significantly outperformed the game’s complete Xbox ecosystem, according to a new analysis by Alinea Analytics. The report reveals that PlayStation physical copies alone generated more revenue than all Xbox versions of the game combined.
According to analyst Rhys Elliot’s newsletter, physical copies of Resident Evil: Requiem sold approximately 1.3 million units, representing roughly 15 percent of the game’s total revenue. On PlayStation specifically, physical media accounted for 30.2 percent of platform revenue. The analysis examined top PlayStation games sorted by physical copies sold and found particularly strong physical disc adoption in Japan.
This data presents an intriguing paradox: while Sony demonstrates its commitment to a discless console future through hardware design choices, physical media continues to represent a substantial revenue stream for major releases. The strong performance of PlayStation physical discs for Resident Evil: Requiem underscores the persistent consumer preference for physical game ownership, suggesting that the transition to entirely digital distribution may progress more slowly than industry momentum suggests.
