Games industry mourns sudden BioWare closure - “Anyone who participated in this travesty should be ashamed”

BioWare, one of the gaming industry’s most influential RPG developers, has been shut down by Electronic Arts after 31 years of operation. The closure, announced Wednesday, resulted in approximately 400 layoffs across EA and the immediate cancellation of the next Mass Effect title.

The decision follows EA’s recent acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, with the company stating it was realigning resources around its most successful franchises. BioWare’s decline was attributed to mixed critical and commercial reception for recent releases, particularly Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024.

The gaming industry responded with an outpouring of tributes from current and former developers, who credited BioWare with shaping their careers. The studio created landmark franchises including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Baldur’s Gate, which popularized choice-driven, narrative-focused RPGs over the past three decades.

Industry veterans expressed frustration with the closure. Warren Spector, legendary developer behind Deus Ex and System Shock, criticized management decisions, questioning what value leadership contributed compared to the creative developers losing their jobs. David Gaider, former Dragon Age lead writer, reflected that “at its height, no other studio in the world did it better.”

Canadian politician Avi Lewis seized on the closure to criticize private equity ownership, stating that EA had “run [BioWare] into the ground” for short-term profit. He called for government support to help employees purchase and operate the studio independently.

The closure marks a significant moment in gaming consolidation, with the loss of a studio that defined an era of Western RPG development.
