EA Could Sell BioWare’s IP As It Looks To Tackle Its Massive Debt, Former Studio Boss Says

Electronic Arts announced on October 21 that it is shutting down BioWare, the legendary developer behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises. The closure will result in approximately 400 job losses and the cancellation of Mass Effect 5, which was in development.

According to former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah, EA may use this restructuring as an opportunity to sell off the Mass Effect and Dragon Age intellectual properties to help manage the company’s substantial $55 billion debt. While EA owns all of BioWare’s IP outright—including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Jade Empire—Darrah noted that with no active development on these franchises, the company could explore licensing options.

Darrah stated it is now “more likely” that EA could divest these properties, though he acknowledged the studio could alternatively choose to shelve the franchises indefinitely. The potential sale would represent a significant shift for franchises that have defined BioWare’s legacy, though it remains unclear whether EA will pursue this path or maintain ownership of the dormant IPs.
