Magic: The Gathering Turns 2 of the Best Star Trek Episodes Into Sagas

Magic: The Gathering is expanding its Universes Beyond crossover line with a dedicated Star Trek set that adapts iconic episodes from the sci-fi franchise’s 60-year history. The set draws inspiration from across all Star Trek shows and films, transforming memorable episodes into playable card mechanics.

A key innovation in the set is the use of “Saga” cards, a design mechanic that translates story arcs into episodic gameplay. According to Magic senior editor Matt Tabak, Sagas are “an exceptional design tool for presenting story arcs from other universes because of their episodic nature,” allowing each chapter to focus on individual story beats and create a narrative progression that mirrors the episodes.

Among the episodes receiving Saga treatment are “The City on the Edge of Tomorrow” and “Amok Time” from the original 1960s series, plus “In the Pale Moonlight” from Deep Space Nine. Polygon exclusively revealed nine new cards from the set, including two Sagas that spotlight Jean-Luc Picard and highlight some of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s most acclaimed episodes.
