The Leaked Mass Effect 5 Trailer Is Absolutely Heartbreaking

Electronic Arts shut down BioWare, the legendary developer behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises, canceling Mass Effect 5 while it was still in early development. The closure eliminated 400 jobs. However, just a day after the announcement, an internal trailer for the cancelled project—titled “Mass Effect: Universe”—leaked on Reddit, offering fans a painful glimpse of what could have been.

The trailer, verified as legitimate by IGN, was created for internal use only and incorporates pre-production assets and in-engine footage. It showcases recognizable Mass Effect elements including the return of fan-favorite character Liara T’Soni, combat inspired by the original trilogy, alien species, space travel, Mass Effect relays, and nightclub scenes. The video introduces a new male protagonist replacing Commander Shepard (notably absent of the iconic N7 logo) and features a prominent male Quarian character, which fans speculated could represent the series’ first playable Quarian member.

The leak resonated emotionally with the community because it demonstrated substantial development progress. An alleged EA employee had previously confirmed that a presentation-ready trailer existed months before the shutdown. Though using pre-production assets and appearing rough, the footage impressed viewers with its authentic Mass Effect aesthetic, appropriate musical score, and what appeared to be returning voice talent. The leak compounded fan disappointment, suggesting the studio had been developing what could have been a meaningful franchise revival following the lukewarm reception of Mass Effect: Andromeda.
