Mass Effect TV Show Still Going Ahead After EA Cancels Mass Effect 5 And Closes BioWare, Report Says
Electronic Arts announced the closure of BioWare on October 21, 2026, resulting in 400 job losses and the cancellation of Mass Effect 5. Despite this major blow to the franchise, the Mass Effect TV series in development at Amazon Prime Video is moving forward, according to sources speaking to IGN. All key creative personnel attached to the project remain signed on, including showrunner Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) and writer Daniel Casey (Fast & Furious 9).
The closure comes following EA’s acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, and Silver Lake in August 2026, which has reportedly shifted the company’s strategic focus toward sports games and away from struggling studios like BioWare. However, since EA retains ownership of the Mass Effect intellectual property, other media adaptations can continue despite the end of video game development. The TV series, which has been in development since 2021, is set after the events of the original trilogy. While the franchise’s gaming future looks uncertain under EA’s new ownership structure, the television adaptation represents the franchise’s continued presence in entertainment media.
