Final Fantasy 14, Umamusume: Pretty Derby, and more impacted as PHP vulnerability outages hit games around the globe
A critical PHP vulnerability discovered this week has caused widespread outages across gaming platforms and websites globally. The security flaw prompted emergency maintenance windows and temporary shutdowns of multiple online services, including the popular massively multiplayer online game Final Fantasy 14 and mobile title Umamusume: Pretty Derby.
Square Enix suspended Final Fantasy 14’s login servers on October 21 as part of emergency security enhancements to protect against potential breaches. The PHP programming language vulnerability posed a significant risk to the massive number of websites and applications built using the technology, necessitating immediate offline maintenance while fixes were distributed and applied.
The outage significantly impacted gameplay for many players. However, console players and those already logged into the game at the time of the suspension found themselves in an unusually quiet game world. The FF14 community has responded cooperatively to the downtime, with active players stepping in to help maintain fellow players’ gardens and crops throughout Eorzea to prevent in-game resources from withering during the extended maintenance period.
The vulnerability exemplifies the cascading effects that underlying infrastructure issues can have across the entertainment industry, affecting multiple games and services simultaneously as developers and publishers worldwide rushed to implement security patches and protect user data.
