Robot smashing catharsis game Virtue and a Sledgehammer is out next week, but there’s an experimental visual novella prologue you can play right now

Virtue and a Sledgehammer, a cathartic action game centered around smashing objects with a sledgehammer, will release next week. To give players an early taste of the experience, a free prologue has just become available.

The prologue, titled “Virtue: Prologue,” offers a notably different experience from the main game. While Virtue and a Sledgehammer is designed as an action game with an emphasis on satisfying, impact-heavy sledgehammer mechanics, the prologue takes the form of an experimental visual novel. This experimental approach allows players to explore the narrative foundations of the game while experiencing a distinct gameplay style.

The game appears to be designed as a stress-relief or catharsis title, with promotional messaging that reads: “Most people resort to therapy. But you chose the brave option. A sledgehammer.” This positions the game as an alternative outlet for stress through destructive gameplay mechanics.

The free prologue’s availability ahead of the main game’s launch gives players the opportunity to engage with the game’s narrative and world-building in a different format before experiencing the full action experience next week.
