Mass Effect Fans Call for EA Boycott as Petition to Save BioWare’s Canceled Game Garners More than 75,000 Signatures

EA announced on October 21 that it is shutting down BioWare, the legendary 30-year-old game development studio, and canceling the next Mass Effect game. BioWare, renowned for pioneering Western RPGs through franchises including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Jade Empire, and Baldur’s Gate, will cease operations as part of EA’s broader restructuring efforts.

The closure has sparked significant fan backlash. A petition titled #SaveMassEffect, launched the same day as the announcement, has gathered over 75,000 signatures, surpassing its initial goal of 30,000. Rather than requesting EA reinstate BioWare, the petition demands that EA either place another studio in charge of the Mass Effect franchise or license the IP to another publisher.

Mass Effect fans are organizing a boycott of all EA products and services in protest. The response reflects the emotional significance of BioWare’s legacy in gaming—a studio that fundamentally shaped the RPG genre over three decades. Additionally, some gaming commentators have called on Microsoft to purchase the Mass Effect IP and recruit former BioWare talent to continue development.

The situation underscores ongoing concerns about industry consolidation and the vulnerability of historic studios within large publishing corporations. For Mass Effect fans, the closure represents both the loss of an anticipated game and the end of a legendary developer that defined an era of role-playing games.
