Disney’s Officially Bringing Back a ’90s Cartoon Icon After 35 Years

Disney is reviving Darkwing Duck, the cult-classic 1990s animated series, with a brand-new show coming to Disney Plus. The revival marks the character’s return after 35 years away from screens, bringing back Drake Mallard as the wisecracking, fedora-wearing crime-fighter in his latest adventure.

The new series reunites the core cast of characters, with Drake’s sidekick Launchpad, his adopted daughter Gosalyn, and his love interest Morgana all returning alongside him. The show also features fan-favorite villains from the original run, including the dark doppelgänger Negaduck and the electricity-powered criminal Megavolt.

According to Disney’s official synopsis, the premise takes a darker turn compared to the original lighthearted superhero parody. Darkwing Duck has been trapped in what is described as his worst nightmare—an alternate universe or dimension—with the fate of an entire universe now hanging in the balance. This setup suggests the revival will blend the comedic tone fans remember with higher stakes storytelling.

The revival fits Disney’s ongoing strategy of mining its extensive animation archives for new content, building on the nostalgia of millennial audiences while introducing the character to a new generation. Darkwing Duck originally aired from 1991 to 1992 and became a beloved entry in Disney’s afternoon animation block, known for its absurdist humor, pop culture references, and over-the-top villains.
