GameMaker’s GMRT runtime will soon be free for all developers
GameMaker announced that its GMRT (next-generation runtime) will become free for commercial use starting January 1, 2027. Developers will be able to create and distribute games across desktop, mobile, web, and GX Games platforms without requiring a professional license—a significant shift from the previous licensing model that required paid commercial licenses.
GMRT, launched in April 2026, represents GameMaker’s latest runtime offering with enhanced tooling capabilities. The new free tier will include source code access across all pricing tiers, though existing tier pricing structures will remain unchanged. This move expands accessibility for developers while maintaining the company’s tiered pricing model.
According to Russell Kay, head of GameMaker, the company is “widening the scope of what we provide to developers” as GMRT continues rolling out in beta across platforms. The streamlined licensing model aims to reduce barriers to entry for developers looking to create and commercially distribute games using the engine.
The runtime includes support for modern development workflows, including AI-based programming integration. This represents a notable shift in GameMaker’s monetization strategy, making its latest runtime technology available to all developers regardless of licensing tier, while preserving premium features and pricing options across different subscription levels.
