Sony Doubles Down on Officially Ditching Physical Media

Sony is phasing out its dedicated Blu-ray player business, marking another step away from physical media. The Japanese electronics company is discontinuing the UBP-X700/K, its last standalone UHD Blu-ray player available in Japan. While Sony hasn’t issued an official announcement, the company’s Japanese online store now lists the model as “Out of stock. This item will not be restocked,” signaling the end of production.

The UBP-X700/K, released in May 2025, becomes the final casualty in Sony’s retreat from high-end optical disc hardware. With this discontinuation, the PlayStation 5 will remain Sony’s only 4K Blu-ray player option for Japanese consumers. This move follows Sony’s earlier announcement that it would cease physical game disc production for PlayStation consoles, reflecting the industry-wide shift toward digital distribution.

Sony’s exit from the dedicated Blu-ray player market represents the company’s commitment to digital-first strategies and underscores the declining relevance of physical media in consumer electronics. The company has invested heavily in digital platforms and services, including PlayStation Plus, as it moves away from optical disc manufacturing and sales.
