Call Of Duty Ads On Xbox Are Even More Annoying This Year With Modern Warfare 4

Microsoft’s promotional campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has drawn criticism from Xbox users for an aggressive marketing approach that automatically replaces custom dashboard backgrounds with promotional imagery. When the game launched, Xbox users discovered that their personalized dynamic backgrounds were forcibly swapped for Call of Duty key art featuring Captain Price, without user consent.

The widespread frustration led users to post complaints on Reddit and gaming forums about the invasive nature of the ad placement. Critics noted the irony of aggressive advertising on hardware and services that users have already paid for, including Xbox Series X|S consoles and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.

However, Microsoft provided a way for users to disable the feature. Players can regain control of their dashboard by navigating to Settings > General > Personalization > My Background and unchecking the “Show event-themed backgrounds” option.

The incident highlights the ongoing tension between publisher marketing ambitions and user experience on gaming platforms. While major first-party game launches on Xbox have historically featured prominent takeover ads, this year’s implementation was notably more intrusive by directly overriding personal user settings rather than using traditional advertising placements.
