Mass Effect Universe “looked incredible” says creator who claims he advised BioWare
BioWare, one of gaming’s most celebrated RPG studios, has been shut down by EA following the company’s acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and private equity investors. The closure marks the end of Mass Effect Universe, the studio’s most anticipated project currently in development.
According to Dantics, a content creator who claims to have served on BioWare’s “Mass Effect Council” and provided feedback during development, the cancelled game was set over 600 years after the original trilogy’s Reaper War. Rather than featuring another invasion storyline, the game would have centred on a “galactic Cold War” between multiple major factions including Humanity, the Krogan, and the Batarians. Dantics described the project as having “looked incredible.”
The closure has resonated throughout the gaming industry and beyond. Award-winning sci-fi author N.K. Jemisin expressed her support for BioWare’s legacy on Bluesky, noting that Mass Effect and Dragon Age served as direct inspiration for her work. Voice actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer, who portrayed Commander Shepard in the original trilogy, have joined the community in calling for action to preserve the Mass Effect franchise’s future.
Industry observers point to EA’s corporate mismanagement as a contributing factor, noting that the publisher struggled to understand the appeal of franchises like Dragon Age and systematically gutted BioWare’s teams over the years. The studio’s closure occurred only months after the PIF acquisition, raising concerns about the future direction of other EA-owned franchises.
BioWare’s legacy as a narrative-focused RPG pioneer is expected to continue influencing game design for years to come, but the loss represents a significant blow to players awaiting new entries in the beloved Mass Effect universe.
