After 14 years of development, Factorio’s final major update is out now
After 14 years of active development, factory-building simulation game Factorio has released its final major update. Version 2.1, now available, marks the conclusion of developer Wube Software’s extended support for the genre-defining title that revolutionized the factory-building genre.
Wube Software announced in May that this update would be the last significant patch, determining that the game had “reached a good place to conclude active game development.” The decision reflects the studio’s thoughtful assessment that Factorio has achieved its creative vision and reached a stable, feature-complete state that satisfies their long-term goals for the project.
The milestone comes two years after the release of the Space Age expansion, which substantially extended the game’s scope by allowing players to industrialize across four alien planets and take their factory operations into space. Despite this major content addition representing a significant creative achievement, the team has decided it’s an appropriate time to end the regular update cycle.
While the final update arrives as a conclusion to the development roadmap, the announcement suggests the patch may not represent the spectacular sendoff that some devoted players might have anticipated given the game’s 14-year journey.
