‘I drank from the chalice of blood’: indie dev scrubs his game of AI-generated voice lines, having previously described the technology as ‘anti-human and anti-art’
Paolo Pedercini, an indie developer also known by the alias Mollieindus, has removed AI-generated voice lines from his ecosocialist satire game Future? No Thanks! following community backlash. The decision represents a sharp reversal, as Pedercini had previously incorporated generative AI into the game while simultaneously denouncing the technology as “a technofascist, anti-human and anti-art project.”
The removal of the AI-generated audio marks the second controversy surrounding the title in recent months. Earlier, Steam briefly delayed the game’s release while reviewing content in the game, specifically fleeting nudity that required evaluation before approval.
The contradiction between Pedercini’s public criticism of AI and his initial use of the technology in Future? No Thanks! drew significant attention from the gaming community. Given that the game itself appears to be a satirical critique of technology and society, the irony of using AI tools while condemning them was not lost on players and observers. The subsequent removal of these voice lines appears to be a direct response to this backlash.
This incident highlights the growing tensions within the indie development community regarding artificial intelligence’s role in game creation. As generative AI tools become more accessible and affordable, developers face increasing pressure from players who oppose the technology on ethical or artistic grounds. The decision to remove the AI content suggests that community sentiment against AI-generated assets remains a significant factor in indie game development.
