Call Of Duty Movie Will Not Be About, “Hey, Let’s Shoot Them All Up,” Director Says

The upcoming Call of Duty movie, set in the Modern Warfare universe, will focus on the human and emotional dimensions of warfare rather than serving as a pure action spectacle, according to director Peter Berg. Berg, known for films including Lone Survivor and Battleship, has emphasized that the adaptation will capture the “cost of war” and the “consequence of war” central to the Modern Warfare games.

Berg explained in an interview with ComicBook that the film will not simply be a shoot-em-up, stating: “This is not just ‘Hey, let’s shoot them all up and shoot popcorn!’” Instead, he emphasized there is “a soul underneath” the story that he and co-writer/producer Taylor Sheridan aim to explore.

The director highlighted the narrative depth of the source material, noting that the Modern Warfare games feature “complicated humans” and “very nuanced storylines” centered on characters like Captain Price, Soap, Ghost, and Alex. While the film will include violence, guns, and military hardware—elements central to the Call of Duty franchise—Berg stressed these will exist within a story that gives them context and meaning.

The Call of Duty movie adaptation was officially announced earlier this year as a project promising “an authentic and exciting” take on the Modern Warfare franchise. With Berg’s vision focused on emotional resonance and the human toll of conflict, the film appears designed to appeal to both fans of the games and broader audiences interested in war drama.
