FBI Is Officially Investigating An Unprecedented Pokémon Card Heist

The FBI has officially launched an investigation into the theft of a FedEx shipment containing approximately $1 million worth of Pokémon trading cards graded by the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA). The truck carrying 6,451 graded card slabs went missing in October, marking what appears to be an unprecedented theft in the collectibles market.

PSA provides professional grading services that are integral to the trading card ecosystem, assigning quality scores on a scale of 1-10 that directly impact card valuations. Cards receiving top PSA grades can command millions of dollars. While PSA insures cards during their assessment and return process, high-value cards often pass through multiple hands before reaching their final destination, creating vulnerable points in the supply chain.

Although shipments of valuable collectibles occasionally go missing, the scale of this particular theft appears extraordinary in the Pokémon card market. The FBI’s involvement underscores the seriousness of the case and the significant financial stakes involved in the rare trading card industry. The incident highlights both the explosive growth in card valuations in recent years and the logistical challenges inherent in transporting high-value collectibles securely.
