Korean police arrest cyberhacking gang reportedly led by self-taught hacker, who allegedly used AI to breach 60 firms and received a mere $210 in ransom

South Korean police have arrested a cyberhacking gang reportedly led by a self-taught hacker who leveraged artificial intelligence tools to conduct cyberattacks against multiple companies. According to reports from Yonhap News Agency, Seoul Economic Daily, and The Chosun Daily, the gang allegedly accessed systems belonging to over 90 firms and compromised approximately 8.2 million records in their attacks.

The case highlights both the rising sophistication of AI-enabled cybercrime and the unpredictable nature of extortion attempts. Despite the scale and scope of their alleged operation, the gang’s financial results were remarkably poor. They reportedly demanded 360 million Won (approximately $271,770 USD) in ransom payments from their victims. However, they ultimately received only 300,000 Won—less than $210—across all their ransom demands.

The stark contrast between ambitious ransom demands and actual payments received suggests the gang’s extortion attempts largely failed, with victims either paying minimal amounts or refusing to comply with demands. This outcome demonstrates that despite technological sophistication and access to AI tools, cybercriminals often struggle to convert breaches into profitable returns, particularly when victims prove unwilling to pay.
