Marvel’s Forgotten Mass Effect Clone Couldn’t Escape the Avengers’ Failure

Marvel’s Avengers (2020), developed by Crystal Dynamics through a collaboration between Marvel and Square Enix, failed to capitalize on the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While praised for its character writing, the game’s repetitive combat systems and heavy reliance on live-service mechanics alienated both critics and players. This disappointing reception cast a long shadow over the next Marvel-Square Enix partnership: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, released in October 2021. Although Guardians of the Galaxy proved to be more critically successful than many anticipated, it struggled to fully escape the negative perception created by its predecessor. The contrast illustrates a broader challenge for Marvel in the video game space—despite the MCU’s near-$8 billion box office success across four Avengers films, the company has struggled to translate that cinematic triumph into equally successful gaming experiences.
