Mass Effect: Universe Would Have Covered All Choices From Original Trilogy
EA announced the shutdown of BioWare last week, resulting in 400 job losses and the cancelation of Mass Effect: Universe, the next entry in the franchise whose title was revealed through a leaked internal trailer.
The game would have taken place after the events of the original trilogy, featuring an innovative system designed to honor every choice players made in the original games. According to technical director Romain Toutain, the game would have let players generate alternate timelines based on their previous Mass Effect decisions. This core mechanic was central to the game’s naming as “Universe,” reflecting BioWare’s philosophy of providing players with “absolute autonomy” over their narrative experience rather than forcing them into a predetermined story path determined by their prior choices.
The canceled project represented BioWare’s ambitious vision for how narrative-driven sequels could respect and meaningfully incorporate player agency across multiple entries in a franchise, honoring the intricate web of decisions players made throughout the original trilogy as they shaped their personalized experience.
