Microsoft’s new Edge option for Mac trades speed for stability, and that’s a good thing
Microsoft is expanding deployment flexibility for Edge on macOS with the introduction of a new Extended stable channel. This new option, which has been available on Windows, allows organizations to receive major feature updates on an eight-week schedule rather than the standard faster release cycle, while continuing to receive security updates on the regular schedule. By decoupling feature updates from security patches, the Extended stable channel gives IT departments and organizations significantly more time to validate and test browser changes within their own environments before wider deployment. This approach addresses a key need in enterprise computing environments where extensive testing and formal change management procedures are necessary before deploying new software to end users. The Extended stable channel represents a more conservative versioning strategy that prioritizes system stability and predictability alongside security, making it particularly valuable for organizations managing large deployments across their infrastructure.
