D&D’s Japanese Rival Sword World Crowdfunding Raises Over $2 million in a Day
Sword World RPG, Japan’s most popular fantasy tabletop role-playing game, has launched its first official English-language localization on BackerKit with remarkable early success, raising over $2 million in its first day. Mugen Gaming, a company specializing in localizing Japanese tabletop games, is leading the English release effort.
The game’s origins trace back to Group SNE, a designer collective founded in the late 1980s after members encountered Dungeons & Dragons in Japan. Inspired by the game, Group SNE began publishing accounts of their own adventures in Japanese magazines, inadvertently pioneering what would later become known as “actual play” content—a format now central to gaming culture. When TSR, D&D’s original publisher, pressured them to stop, Group SNE responded by creating their own original tabletop RPG system: Sword World RPG.
The game became one of Japan’s most successful home-grown fantasy RPGs, establishing Group SNE’s industry reputation. The collective is also known for their work on the Chronicles of Lodoss War franchise, which helped define Japanese fantasy storytelling.
The crowdfunding campaign’s strong response reflects significant Western interest in Japanese tabletop gaming alternatives to D&D. The success demonstrates growing enthusiasm among English-speaking players for diverse TTRPG systems and the commercial viability of bringing Japanese gaming products to international audiences.
