“IT FLIPS UP,” Fallout New Vegas modders yell after releasing a funky Pip-Boy based on cancelled entry Van Buren’s design docs

The Fallout modding community has released new content inspired by Van Buren, the third installment in the Fallout series that was cancelled before completion in 2003. The release includes a Pip-Boy item featuring a distinctive flipping mechanism based on Van Buren’s original design documentation, along with several weapons that capture the aesthetic of the abandoned game.

This content was released by the team behind “Fallout: The New West,” an ongoing community project dedicated to recreating Van Buren as a comprehensive mod for Fallout: New Vegas. The team strategically timed the release for October 23rd, a date significant to the Fallout community as the day the bombs fell in the game’s universe—a date Bethesda traditionally commemorates with marketing announcements and community events.

The Pip-Boy design, which notably features an unexpected flipping mechanism, has generated enthusiasm within the modding community. By preserving and recreating content from Van Buren’s design documentation, the project serves as a form of digital preservation, allowing players to experience elements of a game that never officially released. This effort demonstrates the modding community’s commitment to maintaining Fallout’s legacy and exploring the game design decisions made during Van Buren’s development.
