Walter Koenig, Star Trek’s Chekov, Dies at Age 90

Walter Koenig, the actor best known for playing Russian navigator Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek series, has died at the age of 90. He passed away on Sunday from natural causes at his home in North Hollywood, with his daughter Danielle and niece at his side.

Koenig was born in Chicago in 1936 and gained fame when he joined the Star Trek cast in 1967 for the show’s second season. His boyish appearance and Beatles-style hair were intended to appeal to younger viewers, much like Davy Jones of The Monkees. He appeared in 36 of the 50 original series episodes that aired between 1967-1969 and reprised the role in six Star Trek feature films, including a particularly memorable scene in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan involving a Ceti eel.

Beyond Star Trek, Koenig’s career included roles in science fiction projects such as Babylon 5, Futurama, and Moontrap. However, he was largely typecast by his early success, which limited his opportunities for other acting roles. With Koenig’s passing, only William Shatner and George Takei remain from the original cast’s primary actors.
