Bassist plays Halloween gig wearing a Steam Frame: ‘Interestingly, only one guy asked me about the Frame’

A bassist showcased Valve’s Steam Frame VR headset in an unconventional setting—wearing the device during a full 45-minute live musical performance at a Halloween gig. The musician, who goes by the Reddit handle midtech, played “Them Changes” by Thundercat while fully immersed in the virtual reality headset, relying on a power bank tucked into their left pocket to maintain battery power throughout the set.

The stunt was documented with a 28-second video clip, which midtech shared to the Steam Frame subreddit. Despite the novelty of performing with a high-end VR headset, the response from attendees was surprisingly muted. Midtech noted that only one person in the entire audience asked them about the Frame during or after the performance.

The anecdote highlights both the increasing ubiquity of VR technology and the public’s sometimes limited awareness of gaming hardware innovations. While the Steam Frame represents Valve’s latest entry into the VR market, the bassist’s experience suggests that even when worn visibly during a live event, such devices may not generate the curiosity or conversation one might expect. The performance serves as an interesting commentary on the intersection of gaming peripherals and real-world experiences.
