Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft’s class designer ‘crammed as much’ of the MMO into it so that even veteran tabletop players can experience something new

The upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft tabletop book represents an ambitious adaptation of Blizzard’s long-running MMO into the tabletop RPG format. James Wyatt, principal game designer and project lead for the effort, brings substantial experience to the project—he was already running games set in Azeroth before taking on this role.

Wyatt and his team focused on leveraging what makes tabletop gaming unique compared to digital experiences. As Wyatt explained, a key advantage of playing D&D in Azeroth is the creative flexibility of the medium: “Part of the beauty of playing D&D in the world of Azeroth is that you can do things in D&D that you can’t do in a digital game because the options haven’t been programmed for you.”

The design team reportedly “crammed as much” of the MMO as possible into the tabletop format, creating an experience intended to appeal to both newcomers to Azeroth and veteran World of Warcraft players. By mixing the two RPG systems together, the designers aim to capture the essence of what makes WoW compelling while taking advantage of the improvisational nature of tabletop gameplay.

The Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft book launches November 12.
