Dark Messiah’s new edition adds co-op, cut content and console-exclusive maps to the 20-year-old orc-kicking extravaganza, and it’s coming to Steam this year
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic: Community Edition is a comprehensive fan-made upgrade to Arkane’s 2006 immersive sim, developed with full support from both Ubisoft and Valve. First announced in March, the Community Edition represents a rare collaboration between the modding community and major publishers, delivering what amounts to an official enhancement to the beloved game—available for free on Steam.
The Community Edition has been rebuilt from the ground up using a contemporary version of the Source engine, bringing significant technical improvements to the 20-year-old title. Key upgrades include native Linux support and 64-bit versions for both Windows and Linux, modernizing the game for current systems. The enhanced release also restores previously cut content that never made it into the original release.
Beyond technical enhancements, the Community Edition introduces substantial new gameplay features. These include a cooperative multiplayer mode, New Game+ for additional playthroughs, and an Adventure mode offering bonus levels and challenges. The release also adds console-exclusive maps and modes previously unavailable on PC, along with new spells and weapons to expand the player’s arsenal.
The project exemplifies the potential for meaningful collaboration between indie modders and major publishers. Rather than fighting community modifications, Ubisoft and Valve have chosen to officially support this comprehensive enhancement, allowing fans to experience Dark Messiah in its most feature-complete form.
