Epic is updating its EULA to allow AI training on outputs from Unreal Engine and MetaHuman
Epic Games is updating its End User License Agreement to permit AI training on outputs generated from Unreal Engine and MetaHuman, according to an announcement by CEO Tim Sweeney on X. The policy change removes restrictions on using engine outputs for AI model training, though developers retain the ability to opt out and prohibit AI training for individual projects.
This move aligns with Epic’s broader investment in AI development tools and coding assistants. However, the announcement has drawn scrutiny for apparent contradictions in the company’s AI strategy. According to Kotaku, major technology companies including Epic and Microsoft are simultaneously advancing AI-powered developer tools while restricting or shutting down fan-made AI recreations of existing games—raising questions about inconsistent approaches to AI governance.
The EULA update represents a significant policy shift for one of gaming’s largest engine providers. By defaulting to permission while allowing opt-outs, Epic seeks to balance developer autonomy with corporate interests in advancing AI capabilities.
