Matthew Lillard Calls His Superman 2 Character ‘A Very James Gunn Moment’
Matthew Lillard has joined the cast of Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming sequel in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The actor, known for roles in Carrie, Scream, and Daredevil: Born Again, will portray a character whose identity remains undisclosed, spurring fan speculation about his role in the film.
The film reunites returning cast members including David Corenswelt as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. It also introduces Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and features Brainiac as the primary antagonist. Additional DC Universe characters including Blue Beetle and the Justice Gang are set to appear.
When asked about his mysterious role, Lillard described it as “a very James Gunn moment” and noted fans “wouldn’t worry too much about finding [his character] in the comics.” This cryptic hint suggests he will likely portray an original character created for the film rather than an established DC Comics character. A previous fan theory about his potential role was shot down by Gunn himself. As casting details continue to emerge ahead of the film’s release, Lillard’s true character remains one of the most anticipated reveals for the upcoming DC Universe project.
