Modern Warfare 4 is reportedly down 32% on Xbox (and Steam isn’t much better)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has launched to commercially disappointing results despite critical acclaim for its campaign. According to player count data obtained from TrueAchievements and SteamDB, the game is down 32% from last year’s Black Ops 7 on Xbox—a significant decline in player engagement on Microsoft’s platform just days after launch.

The underperformance extends beyond Xbox to Steam, where Modern Warfare 4’s player numbers also trail competing titles. The game notably struggles to match player counts achieved by other recent releases including Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, and Forza Horizon 6, all of which were made available on Xbox Game Pass.

While Modern Warfare 4’s single-player campaign has earned positive reviews as reportedly the strongest Call of Duty campaign in roughly a decade, these player count metrics suggest engagement challenges across platforms. The disparity is particularly significant given the crowded multiplayer shooter landscape and Xbox Game Pass’s strategy of offering competing titles alongside Call of Duty, potentially fragmenting the player base across multiple available options.
