Microsoft clarifies Surface Laptop Ultra display specs following local dimming concerns

Microsoft has clarified the display specifications of its Surface Laptop Ultra following widespread reviewer feedback about its performance. The device features a Mini LED display with 1,344 local dimming zones, significantly fewer than comparable implementations in competitors’ devices such as Apple’s MacBook Pro with identical display technology.

This disparity in dimming zone count directly contributes to visible artifacts including ghosting and blooming effects, which reviewers have noted make the display appear stuttery and lack smoothness during operation. While the Surface Laptop Ultra’s display maintains good color accuracy, it suffers from poor color contrast compared to other Mini LED displays on the market and falls notably short when compared to OLED alternatives.

The specification clarification addresses concerns raised by multiple reviewers who found the display underwhelming relative to the device’s premium positioning. The revelation highlights that Mini LED technology alone does not guarantee competitive performance in the high-end laptop display market—implementation details such as dimming zone density play a crucial role in final image quality and user experience.
