BioWare Co-Founder Speaks Out on Studio Closure, Mass Effect Cancellation
BioWare, the acclaimed Canadian video game developer, has officially shut down, with the studio experiencing 50 job losses as part of approximately 400 cuts across Electronic Arts. The closure represents a significant loss to the gaming industry, ending one of gaming’s most influential studios.
The studio’s cancellation of Mass Effect 5, titled “Mass Effect: Universe,” compounds the news. According to a leaked internal trailer and statements from former developers, the project was being developed as an “ultimate open-world game” that would have evolved beyond Mass Effect: Andromeda’s formula. Developers indicated the game would have incorporated dynamic player choice and approach-based mechanics beyond traditional dialogue selections.
BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk publicly commented on the closure, discussing his emotional response to the studio’s end. The closure follows EA’s acquisition by a consortium including Saudi Arabia’s Private Investment Fund (PIF), Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, and private equity firm Silver Lake.
The studio’s shutdown has raised concerns within the gaming community about content decisions under new ownership. Reports indicate that pressure has been applied regarding LGBTQ representation, with instances including modified cover art for The Sims 2 in certain markets. This has prompted speculation about the future of franchises like Dragon Age and Mass Effect, which have historically featured inclusive relationship options and representation.
The closure marks the end of an era for a studio that defined several generations of role-playing games.
