GTA 6 Map Size Officially Revealed—How Big Is It?

Grand Theft Auto 6’s developers at Rockstar have revealed major details about the game’s scale and systems ahead of its launch in three weeks. The map for Leonida—GTA 6’s setting encompassing Vice City and surrounding regions—is approximately twice the size of GTA 5, and nearly as large as the combined playable areas of GTA 4, GTA 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2. According to co-studio head Aaron Garbut, the map contains “an order of magnitude more interiors” than previous Rockstar games, with “so many people” having thoughtfully designed individual locations.

The game features an unprecedentedly complex NPC system, with approximately 600,000 unique character animations. These pedestrians are assigned dynamic personality traits that account for temperament, aggression, location, what they’ve witnessed, and how the player has interacted with them. Different districts within Leonida have distinct demographic and professional characteristics that shape NPC behavior and appearance.

Rockstar released 12 new gameplay screenshots showcasing the detail across Leonida’s regions, including Grassrivers and Ambrosia, featuring playable protagonists Jason and Lucia. The level of character detail and world interactivity has become a focal point as the studio addresses expectations built over the 13 years since GTA 5’s release. Garbut acknowledged the immense pressure, stating “I feel like we’ve built a pyramid on Everest,” while emphasizing that Rockstar has not compromised on scale, detail, interactivity, story, or open-world design.
