Here’s Why State Of Decay 3 Has Taken 6 Years To Develop So Far
State of Decay 3 was announced in 2020 with an ambitious vision, but six years into development, Undead Labs has significantly scaled back its scope and design direction. The original announcement trailer showcased features that never made it into the game, including mutated wildlife and snowy environments, hinting at the evolving nature of the project.
Following founder Jeff Strain’s departure in 2019, design team members continued building systems to support an increasingly ambitious vision. However, the studio ultimately abandoned plans to expand State of Decay 3 into an MMO, opting instead for a more focused gameplay experience. CEO Philip Holt explained the reasoning behind these significant design changes.
The extended development timeline and creative overhauls reflect broader challenges facing the studio, including its transition away from Xbox. The combination of leadership changes, shifting design priorities, and a repositioned relationship with its original platform partner has shaped the game’s current direction. After six years, State of Decay 3 represents a substantially different project than what was initially envisioned.
