COD Modern Warfare 4’s controversial Possum ability nerfed to stop it being used “as a combat mechanic instead of a survival mechanic”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s controversial Possum ability—a trait that allows players to revive after death—has been nerfed in the latest patch to prevent it from being used as an aggressive combat mechanic rather than a survival tool.

The Possum ability has sparked significant debate among players since the launch of Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ extraction mode. Community discussions have centered on two main topics: whether the game should include a PvE-only mode and whether Possum is an appropriate fit for an extraction-based experience, where permanent death is typically a core mechanic.

Infinity Ward has taken a clear stance by implementing key restrictions to Possum’s functionality. Under the new changes, players can no longer activate Possum if the enemy team that eliminated them is still nearby, preventing it from being used to immediately rejoin combat. Additionally, the ability cannot be used if fewer than four minutes have elapsed since the previous activation.

The developer’s stated goal is to rebalance the ability so it functions as intended—as a survival mechanism rather than a combat tool. By adding cooldowns and proximity restrictions, Infinity Ward aims to reduce situations where Possum effectively circumvents the extraction mode’s risk/reward dynamics, where players typically face consequences for dying.
