Review: Predator Atlas 8: Is Arc G3 Extreme a Game-Changer for PC Handhelds?
Acer has released the Predator Atlas 8, a new PC handheld priced at $1,300/£1,300 featuring Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme chipset—the company’s first handheld-specific processor. The device represents a significant entry in the growing PC handheld market, where it competes directly with AMD-based alternatives like the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20.
The Atlas 8’s launch comes amid substantial price increases for components like RAM and SSDs, contributing to the premium pricing across new handheld devices this year. Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme is positioned as the hardware highlight, offering a new GPU option for portable gaming beyond AMD’s established Z2 Extreme processor.
However, Digital Foundry’s review indicates that Windows may be limiting the device’s potential. While the Arc G3 Extreme hardware is capable, the operating system constrains the handheld’s ability to fully leverage its performance advantages compared to competitors. This reflects an ongoing tension in the PC handheld space—balancing powerful hardware with optimized software that can match the streamlined experiences of purpose-built gaming devices.
