CoD: Modern Warfare To Cut Real-Life Korean Tragedy Segment After Backlash

Activision has apologized and committed to removing real footage of a deadly 2022 tragedy from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 following backlash from bereaved families and community members. The Seoul Halloween crowd crush, which occurred in October 2022 during Halloween celebrations in the Itaewon neighborhood of Seoul, South Korea, resulted in approximately 160 deaths and nearly 200 injuries when crowds surged in narrow streets and alleyways.

Modern Warfare 4, developed by Infinity Ward, launched on October 23 across consoles and PC. The game’s opening cinematic includes footage from rescue efforts at the Itaewon disaster, filtered and effects-layered as part of a montage depicting the fictional aftermath of a North Korean invasion of South Korea. Bereaved families expressed their distress, issuing statements describing the inclusion as “appalling” and demanding the footage be removed immediately.

In response, Activision issued a formal apology to the Korea Herald and South Korean broadcaster MBC, stating: “We offer our deepest condolences and sincere apologies to the bereaved families, victims and everyone who has been deeply hurt or distressed by this incident.” The company confirmed that the footage will be completely removed in an update scheduled for November 12, 2026.

The incident highlights ongoing sensitivity surrounding the tragedy, which occurred four years ago this month. October marks the anniversary period when bereaved families and community organizers gather to remember those lost. Activision’s decision to remove the footage comes as the gaming industry faces increased scrutiny over its use of real-world tragedies and sensitive content in fictional narratives without explicit consent from affected communities.
