“My Mom Became A Crater” Is A Very Death Stranding Way To Start An Anime
Kojima Productions has unveiled the first official trailer for Death Stranding: Isolations, a new original net anime series set in the Death Stranding universe. The teaser was released on October 30, 2026, with the series set to premiere in 2027 on Disney+.
Unlike previous Death Stranding titles, Isolations features an entirely new cast of protagonists experiencing their own story within the franchise’s post-apocalyptic setting. The anime takes place shortly after protagonist Sam Bridges connects North America to the Chiral Network in the games, though this new connection brings unforeseen consequences. The story follows characters tormented by Beached Things (BTs)—souls of the dead trapped between worlds—that plague the game’s universe.
The anime’s unorthodox tagline, “My mom became a crater,” references the catastrophic voidouts that occur when BTs explosively manifest in the physical world. This darkly comedic subtitle perfectly captures the surreal, unconventional tone characteristic of creator Hideo Kojima’s artistic vision, which has defined the Death Stranding franchise since its 2019 debut.
With no concrete plans for Death Stranding 3 beyond concept drafts, this anime adaptation represents the franchise’s expansion into new media. The project continues Kojima Productions’ pattern of bringing the series’ distinctive arthouse sensibility and intricate world-building to audiences through different formats, building on the success of the original game and its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
