GTA 6’s souped-up Red Dead Redemption 2-style morality system will scale from ‘Professional’ to ‘Irredeemable’ so players can decide what kind of criminal they want to be
Rockstar Games has revealed several gameplay mechanics for Grand Theft Auto 6 through an Edge magazine feature interview with Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North. The game will introduce a Criminal Profile system—a morality mechanic that tracks player actions and scales from “Professional” to “Irredeemable.” This system determines how the game world reacts to the player’s behavior, allowing criminals to operate at different infamy levels rather than always facing lethal consequences, creating space for redemption within the criminal lifestyle.
Leonida, the game’s setting, will feature an extensive public transportation system including trains and bus routes, mirroring the immersive design of Red Dead Redemption 2. Players can traverse the city using functioning buses and trains rather than relying exclusively on stolen vehicles, adding depth to exploration mechanics.
The game will also emphasize character relationships through a quantified progression system. Players control protagonists Jason and Lucia, whose romantic bond is tracked on a four-point scale. Activities like beach walks and gym sessions increase their relationship rating, intertwining personal connections with the criminal narrative.
These mechanics collectively demonstrate Rockstar’s approach to creating reactive worlds where player choices meaningfully influence both criminal reputation and personal relationships.
