James Gunn Says Harley Quinn Will Join the DCU Eventually, and if Margot Robbie Wants to Play Here He’ll ‘Bend Over Backwards to Explain That in the World’

James Gunn has addressed the status of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn within the newly rebooted DC Universe, suggesting the character could eventually join the expanded cinematic franchise. Robbie’s portrayal of Quinn has spanned multiple films including David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad. Since launching his DCU reboot, Gunn has kept Quinn’s status ambiguous—while some characters from The Suicide Squad have appeared in DCU projects (notably Peacemaker), others have not yet been incorporated. Gunn indicated that Quinn will eventually appear in the DCU and expressed willingness to work with Robbie if she wishes to reprise the role, stating he would “bend over backwards to explain that in the world” if the actress wanted to continue. The filmmaking and development challenges of integrating established character versions into a newly established continuity remain a central consideration for Gunn’s approach to the DCU.
