GOTY hopeful Mina the Hollower bought the studio financial stability “for now,” while the Shovel Knight devs work on a new 3D game
Yacht Club Games has confirmed that most of its developers are working on a new 3D game following the critical and commercial success of Mina the Hollower. The indie studio described the old-school adventure game as a “make-or-break” moment before its release earlier this year, with the title’s performance ultimately providing the studio with much-needed financial stability.
The studio faced significant financial pressures stemming from a global pandemic and a failed experiment to expand into a multi-project development model. These challenges had put Yacht Club Games in a precarious financial position prior to Mina the Hollower’s launch. However, the game’s strong sales have bought the studio time to continue operations and pursue new projects, though leadership indicated this stability is only secured “for now.”
The new 3D game in development is believed to potentially be Shovel Knight 3D, representing an expansion of the studio’s most recognized franchise into a new dimension. This shift marks a significant evolution for a studio historically known for 2D pixel-art games. Alongside development of the new project, Yacht Club Games is also planning additional post-launch content for Mina the Hollower, suggesting continued support for the title that proved vital to the studio’s survival.
