Reddit Will Soon Require You to Be Logged In, Likely Because of AI Overviews
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has announced plans to make the platform “primarily logged-in,” requiring users to create an account to access most content. The move, detailed in a post titled “About that login screen,” aims to improve user experience, enhance the platform’s advertising business, comply with safety regulations, and protect Reddit data.
The decision appears partly motivated by concerns about unauthorized data scraping for AI training, particularly through search engine features like Google’s AI Overviews, which have reproduced Reddit content without proper attribution. By gating content behind a login requirement, Reddit can better control how its data is accessed and used by third parties.
Historically, Reddit has operated as an open platform accessible to all, allowing search engines and anonymous users to freely browse discussions and find answers. This change would restrict that access. The company argues the shift improves security and user safety while maintaining the platform’s ability to serve its core community.
The move represents a significant strategic pivot for Reddit, prioritizing monetization through targeted advertising and data protection over open accessibility.
